JULY 19 & 20: Community Weekend Honoring Amistad: Film, Music, Exhibit & Waterfront Programs

You are invited to a special community weekend coinciding with the New Haven Museum’s “Amistad Retold” and the docking of the Amistad Freedom Schooner at Long Wharf in New Haven.

Friday, July 19 – Amistad Tours & Movie

Canal Boathouse,
475 Long Wharf Drive

3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Visit the Amistad Freedom Schooner and “Food Truck Paradise” on Long Wharf. Bring picnics and chairs to the deck

7:30 p.m.  A free outdoor screening of the 1997 film "Amistad" by Steven Spielberg (rated R), with a short introduction exploring its critical reception, will be held at the Canal Boathouse at Long Wharf, with The Amistad Freedom Schooner as a commanding visual backdrop.

Musical performance by Nia Arts and Quoron Walker followed by free, hourly tours of the “Amistad: Retold” exhibition till 5 p.m. 

Noon to 5:00 p.m. – Amistad Freedom Schooner Tours
Long Wharf Pier
351 Long Wharf Drive

A musical performance by Michael Mills, master drummer / percussionist accompanied by drummers of “Rhythms from the Heart” will launch open house tours the Amistad Freedom Schooner. Discovering Amistad staff members will be onsite to discuss the significance of the Amistad Rebellion of 1839, how the ship model was built, and how it is used today. Admission will be free of charge.
